ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL STADIUM
On June 10, 1944, the National Stadium opened its doors to the public, and thus was born the sports complex known today as the Centro Desportivo Nacional do Jamor (CDNJ).
After 77 years, the CDNJ continues to be the largest and most emblematic of the national sports complexes: 77 years full of history, serving sport.
The past year was marked by the limitations imposed by the fight against the pandemic; the CDNJ suffered interruptions in its operations and many limitations to its activities, as happened everywhere.
However, and despite this, in anticipation of the many years to come, there was a significant effort on the part of the IPDJ/CDNJ to implement a set of improvements in various areas of the sports complex, so that a better service is provided to all who visit us, whether for sports or leisure:
• At the National Stadium, it was possible to replace the pavement of the athletics track, which for more than 20 years had not undergone improvement works. Its recovery has long been requested by users who use it and also by the Portuguese Athletics Federation (FPA), which recognizes in it conditions not only for training, but also for hosting national and international events with some significance.
The start of the works that will lead to the replacement of the lawn is expected soon.
• As for the Jamor Swimming Pool Complex, we highlight the acquisition of 2 new raised platforms (headwalls) for the tops of the Olympic Swimming Pool, the creation of a space with partition for holding group sessions – #BeActive space and the acquisition of didactic-pedagogical material.
Also for 2021, it is planned to change the main entrance of the building, with the installation of automatic sliding doors, the replacement of the bench projectors and the reinforcement of the lighting on the pier, the requalification of the changing rooms (common and teachers) and also the requalification of the service area at the secretariat level.
• The two mini-golf circuits were reclassified, with a low-relief fence for the demarcation of the playing areas having been implemented.
• The network of accessible routes was improved, with the creation of a Cycle Path on Av. Pierre de Coubertin, between the swimming pools and the stadium.
• On the XCO and Enduro tracks there was an intervention to optimize the layout of the tracks, as well as the placement of signs indicating cycling tracks.
About 800 meters of lanes/paths that coincided were released - around 50 intersection points of pedestrian paths were identified with the XCO lanes - there are now only 15 intersection points, which will still be the target of intervention in 2021 by placing uneven structures that will allow users of both activities not to cross directly on the lanes/paths.
• For the Open Air Gym, various equipment was purchased to replace the previous equipment, which no longer offered the quality or safety that is intended for a space with those characteristics.
• In the Play and Recreation Space, a thorough recovery of the existing equipment was carried out, thus ensuring the safety of all children who seek this space. New structures were put in place to improve the attractiveness of the space for children who seek it daily.
For a second phase, an intervention is already planned for the mini-circuit with obstacles in the trees and additional artificial structures will be installed, to complete the entire space and guarantee the safety of users.
• The two Multi-Sports Fields located near the Shooting Range, intended for Basketball and Volleyball practice, were reclassified: they are facilities for free use, except in the case of federated clubs reservations for the exclusive use of the fields. More recently, these fields were equipped with a ramp, to facilitate access for people with mobility difficulties.
• In the firing range, lighting was changed to LED in the access corridor and public area of the 10 meter firing range.
• Special attention was also given to green spaces, especially those located next to the old tram racket and the framing area of Quinta da Graça. 100 new trees of different species were planted there, including stone pines, oaks and red oaks, and removed about 20 specimens, which had great inclinations of the trunk, as a measure of protection of people and goods. Trees were also planted to consolidate the slope of the Chapel of N.S. da Boa Viagem and to restore the green spaces surrounding the swimming pools.
• Also noteworthy in 2021 was the inauguration of the first section of the Green and Blue Axis (EVA), which crosses the CDNJ from the area of the old tram racket to the area next to the Cross Track and the tunnel of the A5. This inter-municipal project created a continuous path of smooth mobility, to which the CDNJ contributes, namely with the placement of various urban furniture (banks and litter bins).
This description, which is not intended to be exhaustive, exposes a very significant set of improvements, which reflects the commitment of the IPDJ/CDNJ to permanently strive for the provision of a better service, ensuring the continuity of Jamor in a process of permanent improvement.
